"Pegging Isn't New to Me, Friendo, But It Is for Disney" - Disney
Their fake- feud will always be comedy gold for me.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been foreshadowing a much larger cinematic event since 2009. It’s too bad many struggle with Marvel Fatigue at this moment in time.
‘Endgame’ certainly ended the game for everyone’s favorite Superhero universe. With few exceptions released over the last few years post ‘Endgame, it seems people have fallen off of the Cinematic Universe that changed the industry’s entire trajectory.
The novelty has worn off, Superhero movies have dominated the box office for nearly decades at this point. Been there, done that… But that’s exactly what the vibe was before the first ‘Deadpool’ was released in 2016. It was released just before Marvel started Phase 3 by Fox, separate from the MCU at the time. The previous years’ releases included ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ Both fine but ultimately forgettable installations to the MCU in my opinion.
I was also expecting ‘Deadpool’ to be just ‘fine,’ but it’s unique charm and sense of humor cut through some of the hero tropes we had seen over and over again. This time, it was someone who had a savior complex, but instead was fueled by revenge and vanity. It had a self-deprecating approach to the genre, and Ryan Reynolds nailed the delivery. It was a breath of fresh air.
All these years later and it feels like deja vu. I’m exhausted by Marvel, but equally love Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Could this be a film that re-invigorates the superhero genre after a year of box office failures? (The Marvels, Aquaman 2, The Flash… just to throw some jabs at DC too).
The trailer for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ dropped tonight during the Superbowl.
No, I don’t think this movie will re-invigorate the genre. I don’t think this will suddenly spark a sense of direction in this Phase of the MCU, but I do think it will perform well in the box-office. I do think it will be very entertaining with awesome action sequences, great comedic moments between Deadpool and Wolverine, and I’ll even go so far as to say perhaps it will rectify some of the previous mistakes Fox made with the original X-Men movies. Allegedly, some fan favorites were spotted on set and might make cameos. Which X-Men do you hope to see?
Are you excited for this crossover? Or are you dreading the obligation to see it in theaters? Is there anything Marvel can do to excite you like it once did?
