Green and Pink Look Good Together
“Are people born Wicked? Or do they have Wickedness thrust upon them?”
As a former musical theater kid, I do feel the need to express my excitement for the upcoming “Wicked” movie, expected November 2024.
Based in the OG fantasy world, Oz, this story depicts the unlikely true friendship between Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good. The first look premiered during the Superbowl.
Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda) will undoubtably sound amazing. The production design looks incredibly colorful and grandiose, and I’m really excited to see all of the cinematography choices to help tell this story. It’s only a first look, so there’s not much to comment on in this trailer.
If you are unfamiliar with Cynthia’s gift of a voice, I encourage you to take a little Youtube dive to see some of her best performances. She is transcendent. I believe this film will make her a household name and earn her many accolades.
Many fans were not exactly thrilled to hear that Ariana Grande was cast to play Glinda. Casting drama aside, I think she’s going to exceed their expectations. Yes, she’s one of the biggest pop stars on earth with a signature sound, but did you know she started on broadway? She possesses an incredible instrument and an even better ear. Not only that, but she is incredibly close to Kristin Chenowith, the original Glinda. I think she will give proper respect to the role.
I’m sure we will see a full length trailer in the next couple of months, but until then we will just have to speculate!
If you’re a fan of the musical, which song are you most excited for? Do you think Cynthia and Ariana are good choices for these iconic roles?
Unrelated to the movie, I stumbled across this amazing funk-cover of “Defying Gravity” by Third Reprive featuring Amanda Barise. I cannot get it out of my head, and I usually don’t love re-arranging showtunes…
